Hi! My name is Emily Pennefather, and I am a fourth-year student in International Relations and Environmental Science at UBC. I think scuba diving and freediving are such incredible activities because they gave me the chance to further connect with and explore the ocean, a place where I feel most comfortable and have experienced some of my best memories. A fun fact about me is that I love seals and orcas, though that can be a bit conflicting at times.

Hi! My name is McEwen Gutierrez, and I am currently going into my senior year of Environmental Sustainability with a minor in Economics. I started diving when I was 12 in Gran Canaria, and received my open water in Egypt. My favorite ocean creatures are turtles, orcas, and eels. Additionally, I plan on traveling the world working as a dive master once I finish my degree!

Major: Geology

Hello there! This is Joy and I'm currently 3rd year in Geology cuz this major rocks! I started diving in 2021 which was definitely the best thing ever. The best kind of dive that I love is a nice DPV dive (sidemount ofc) or just taking macro pics for nudibranchs. So...when are you going to dive with us?

Major: Business and Computer Science

Hi everyone,
My name is Philippe and I'm a third year student studying Business and Computer Science. I did my open water scuba diving course in a lake in 2020, but became a PADI Divemaster in Indonesia in 2023. A super cool ocean fact that I know is that Dolphin's sleep with one eye open to protect themselves from predators.

Major: Engineering / Oceanography

Hi! I'm Dylan Love and I'm a 4th year Environmental Engineering and Oceanography student at ubc. I have been with the club for 5 years now and have loved every moment of it! I got into diving because since I was a kid I have loved fishies and I wanted to spend more time with them. Some fun scuba facts about me are that I am more scared of dolphins than sharks and that I have dove on three continents!

Major: Psychology

Howdy! I'm Erica an I got into diving because my whole family loves Scuba. Although I am a tropical water girlie at heart, the freezing water of Vancouver has charmed me with its algae ridden waters and creepy crawly lingcods. My favorite ocean creature has to be an Octopus, though I also love kelp forests and fishies!

I'm Talisha! I'm a 2nd year in the Master's of Applied Sciences program studying power systems and renewable energy. I did my first discovery dive when I was 24, persuaded by my partner, even though I didn't like going into the ocean. I had a magical time - I saw turtles, rays and sharks! Since then, I got my Open Water license and never looked back. If you ever want to conquer your fears, diving is a great place to start!

Volunteer Coordinator

Major: Biology / Oceanography

Hey! My name is Jordan and I am in year 3 science majoring in Biology and minoring in Oceanography. I hope to become a marine biologist, and yes, I do enjoy long walks on the beach (to look for marine invertebrates in the intertidal)! A somewhat fun, but existential fact about the ocean is that it is 70% unexplored. That means we know more about our solar system than one of the most significant aspects of our Earth. What got me into scuba diving, other than it being as recommended as a suggestion can be for marine biology, is uncovering the mystery of what is under the waves. I was born and raised on the North Shore in Metro Vancouver, so nature has been a part of my being since forever. My favourite sea creature is the Giant Pacific Octopus, and the Glass Sponge Reefs of the Howe Sound. I hope to see you in the shop or at a club dive!

Major: Food science and Nutrition

Hey!! My name is Jolin and I’m in my fifth year studying food science and nutrition. I got into diving because I was curious of the unknown. Other than being in my mom’s womb for 9 months, I had no other experience being underwater for long periods of time. Sure I’ve swam before, but after I experienced diving— I discovered the inner peace that comes with it. When all I hear are my breath and bubbles, and all I see are fishies and my buddies, nothing else matters. #Zen

Major: Political Sciences

Hi everyone! I’m Yuya, a third-year Political Science major at UBC. I started diving this February and quickly fell in love with the unique underwater world of Vancouver—less tropical, but full of character. I’ve already had some amazing experiences through the UBC Aqua Society and am excited to keep diving with this great community. As this year’s Media Coordinator, I’m looking forward to capturing and sharing those moments with all of you!
